We are told that John Wesley Hawkins was born Thursday,
November 15, 1838, in Cherokee County, Virginia. John, at the age of 11 moved to the Hickman Plantation in Fillmore, Louisiana, with his slave master. John would remain in Louisiana for the rest of his life. In 1871 just 6 years after slavery was ended, Reverend John Wesley Hawkins was given a plot of land by his former master's wife, on which he founded and built the first church in the area for African Americans. The church was called the Fillmore Colored Methodist Episcopal Church, in Fillmore, Louisiana. The building was located on the north side of Highway 80 East. The second Fillmore Church was built in 1928 about a year before Reverend Hawkins died. Reverend Hawkins was married to Matilda Garrison. Matilda and John had eight children; Julia 1861-1886, Aaron 1864-1941, Mary 1865-1933, Elizabeth 1869-1966, John 1870-1949, Arthur 1874-1956, Thomas 1876-1951, and Minnie 1878-1886. As a spiritual leader many of Reverend Hawkins' many of his descendants have followed his footsteps and become ministers of the Gospel. Reverend John Wesley Hawkins, died on Saturday, January 19. 1929.
