Patricia Jean Abbott, 88, of Springfield, formerly of Island Grove and Jacksonville, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at Concordia Village Care Center.
She was born April 20, 1926, in Chicago, to James Ramsey and Edith Powell Hoatson. On Aug. 13, 1947, she married the late Merton Henderson Abbott.
She will be greatly missed by her loving family: daughters, Susan (Steve) Gordon of Madison, Wisconsin, and Christine (Steve) Bedford of Chatham; son, John (Ruth) Abbott of Denver; grandchildren, Rachael Klapko, Jade Maher, Tonya Grover, Ben Bedford, Sarah Johnson, and Daniel Bedford; great-grandchildren, Ian Maher, Jacen Maher, Emily Abate, Annelise Abate, Jasper Johnson, and Jack Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Abbott was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Massey, and her brother, James.
After graduating from MacMurray College, Patricia taught grade school in Springfield District 186, retiring after 20 years of service. She owned A-1 Quilters and enjoyed needlepoint, knitting, and other handiwork. Mrs. Abbott enjoyed traveling and went to such places as the United Kingdom, Mexico's Baja Peninsula, Florida, and the Southwest, which sparked her interest in Native American art.
Cremation rites will be accorded by Cremation Services of Central Illinois in Chatham before public services. A luncheon reception for family and friends will be held noon Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Maldaner's upstairs, 222 S. 6th St., Springfield. RSVP requested by Aug. 14 by email [email protected] or call 608-278-9036. Private family burial of her urn will be in Island Grove Cemetery.
