Allen E. “Shelly” Schell, 83, of Nelliston, died Saturday. Jan. 31, 1998, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, after a long illness. Mr. Schell was born June 11, 1914, in the Town of Oppenheim, the son of Elmer and Mary Allen Schell. He was educated in St. Johnsville Central School and was a life-long area resident. On Dec. 8, 1940, he married Betty Ames in Watertown. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army military police. Mr. Schell was employed for International Union of Operating Engineers, Albany, for 20 years, retiring in 1959. He later owned and operated Nelliston Lock Co until his death. Mr. Schell was a member of Fort Plain United Methodist Church. Fort Klock Historic Restoration Society. Lock Museum of American in Terryville. CT, Central New York Locksmithing Association, National Association of Locksmiths, a 50-year member of American Legion Post 554 Fort Plain. A 60-year member of Palatine Union Grange, Johnstown Loyal Order of Moose, member of Pilgrim Degree, International Order of the Odd Fellows of Cherry Valley and Montgomery County Republican Club. Survivors, besides his widow, include a cousin, Albert Castrucci of St. Johnsville, as well as many other cousins. A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Gray Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Fort Plain, the Rev. Alan Brumback officiated. Burial will be in Rural Park Cemetery, Ingham Mills, in spring. Calling hours were Monday, Feb. 2, at the funeral home during which American Legion Post 554 conducted a memorial service.
