Alan Shepard's widow dead at 76
Louise Brewer Shepard, widow of NASA astronaut Alan B. Shepard Jr., and a longtime Houston resident, died this week in California. She was 76, according to family members.
She died of a heart attack while traveling by airliner between San Francisco and Monterey, Calif., on Tuesday night, according to her nephew, David Sherman of Houston. She was en route to her Pebble Beach, Calif., home following a visit with her daughter, Laura Shepard Churchley, of Evergreen, Colo.

Her death followed closely the death of her husband. America's first space traveler and the fifth of 12 men to walk on the moon, Alan Shepard died July 21 in a Monterey hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 74.

Services for Louise Shepard were pending in California on Wednesday.

She is survived by three daughters, Laura; Juliana Shepard Jenkins of Wimberley, Texas; and Alice Shepard Wackerman of Plano.

Louise Brewer was a native of Kennett Square, Pa., and a graduate of Principia College of Elsah, Ill.

She wed Alan Shepard on March 3, 1945, after his graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy. The couple began a three decade long residency in Houston during the early 1960s and maintained homes in Breckenridge, Colo., and Texas until they settled in Pebble Beach, Calif., in the early 1990s.

The family requests that donations be made in lieu of flowers to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, 6225 Vector Space Blvd., Titusville, Fla. 32780. Shepard was founding chairman of the organization.

Louise Shepard, wife of the pioneering Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard, died while traveling just a month after her husband's death, NASA officials said. Friends said Louise Shepard suffered a heart attack Tuesday on a flight from San Francisco to her home in Monterey. She was believed to have been 74.

She died while returning from a visit with a daughter in Colorado, friends said.

Her husband, one of the original seven astronauts, made the pioneering Freedom 7 Mercury voyage into space in 1961. He died in his sleep last month at age 74 while being treated for leukemia.

His wife of 53 years, Louise Brewer, died five weeks afterward. Both were cremated, and their ashes were scattered together by a Navy helicopter over Stillwater Cove, in front of their Pebble Beach home.

They had three daughters, Laura (born July 2, 1947), Juliana (born March 16, 1951), and Alice (born in 1951). Alice was Louise's niece, but raised as their own daughter. Shepard also had six grandchildren.
