Ruth C. Belz, age 89, of Decorah, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah following a long illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 5, 2008 at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Allen Vik with burial in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah.
Friends may call from 3:00 – 6:00 P.M. Sunday, May 4 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and one hour prior to the services on Monday at the church.
Survivors include her two sons: Les Belz of Winona, MN and Leo Belz of Holmen, WI; her three daughters: Kathy Olson of Decorah, Sandra Belz of Decorah and Joanne Rasmussen of Hampton, IA.
Ruth Catherine (Severson) Belz was born October 12, 1918 in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Nellie (Lokkebo-Hanson) Severson. She was baptized January 26, 1919 and confirmed June 4, 1933 at Decorah Lutheran Church. She graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1937.
She was united in marriage to Roy L. Belz on August 26, 1945 at Decorah Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with seven children: Ronald, Les, Phyllis, Leo, Kathy, Sandra and Joanne.
Ruth, Roy and the family lived in LaCrosse, WI from 1950 to 1963 at which point they moved back to Decorah. She worked at Decorah schools as a cook from 1965 to 1984.
Ruth was very active at Decorah Lutheran Church, belonging to Ladies’ Aid and Circle, and she was a Sunday School teacher and a Bible School teacher. She was also a Girl Scout leader and a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts. Her favorite hobby was embroidery, creating special gifts for family and friends.
Ruth became a resident of Barthell Order of the Eastern Star Home on September 14, 2006. She died there on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at the age of 89 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy, on June 6, 1998; one son, Ronald, on April 21, 2002; an infant daughter, Phyllis; five brothers: Chester, Arthur, Hartvig, George and Norman Severson; her twin sister, Ruby Garcia; an infant granddaughter, Elizabeth Belz; and a great-grandson, Drake Moody.
She is survived by her two sons: Les (Lori) Belz of Winona, MN and Leo (Mary) Belz of Holmen, WI; her three daughters: Kathy Belz and her fiancé, Kirsten Olson of Decorah, Sandra Belz of Decorah and Joanne (Jim) Rasmussen of Hampton, IA; her daughter-in-law, Merle Belz of Rochester, MN; her grandchildren: Laurie Moody, Christopher Belz, Sarah Belz, Lindsey Belz, Timothy Belz, Samuel Belz, Daniel Rasmussen and Katie Rasmussen; her great-grandchildren: Samantha Moody, Johnathan Moody, and Abigail Moody; her special niece and nephew, Judy Hunter and Mike Garcia; and many other nieces and nephews.
