Robert Ahlers was born on January 21, 1936 to Michael and Mary (Macke) Ahlers on the family farm near Salem. He grew up near Salem and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School. After school Bob enlisted in the US Army and served from 1956 - 1959. On June 12, 1962 he married Leona Hagen at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Bob farmed for many years, retiring in 2007. Leona passed away in 2010.
Bob was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem where he had served on the lay board and in the Knights of Columbus. He also served on the Sun Prairie Township board.
He is survived by his children, Linda (Jim) Gill of San Antonio, TX, Roger (April) of Huron and Steve (Noel) of Mitchell; seven grandchildren, Kristen Gill, Lindsay Smith, Ryan Ahlers, Tyler Ahlers, Benjamin Ahlers, Katie Ahlers, and Emma Ahlers, three great-grandchildren, Madisyn, Jalyssa, and Sterling; one sister, Melaine Daulton of Sioux Falls; three sisters-in-law, Alida and Jean Ahlers and Gertie Hagen; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona, his parents, two brothers, Marvin and Alvin, an infant daughter, and brothers-in-law, Wayne Hagen and Bill Daulton.
