"Phillip D. Roberts, for many years a well known leader among the miners and former president of the United Mine Workers of District 8 passed away at his home near Pontiac about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon after a protracted illness.

The deceased ad been in poor health for the past year, but several weeks ago his condition became very serious and his death has been expected for some time. Mr. Roberts was born in South Wales, but came to this country when a young man and had lived in the vicinity of Carbon for the past twenty-six years, working in the coal mines for the greater part of the time. He had always been prominent in the miners' organization and was twice elected to the presidency of the district. In 1900 he was nominated by the Democrats of Van Buren township as their candidate for trustee and was elected and filled the office for four years in a very proficient manner.

The deceased was 48 years, 9 months and 13 days old at the time of his death, which was due to an abcess of the liver. He is survived by the widow and two daughters, one sister and seven brothers. Four of the brothers reside in Illinois and the other three, and a sister live in Wales. The deceased was a member of the K. of P. lodge, of Cardonia and of the I.O.O.F. lodge, of Carbon. The time and place of holding the funeral has not yet been arranged."
