Merrie Lou Hilton Felton
September 12, 1925 - January 12, 2022
Seattle , Washington - Merrie Lou (Hilton) Felton passed on from this life on January 12, 2022, at the age of 96. She was born on September 12, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Samuel Boyd Hilton and Merrie Lou (Crawford) Hilton. She was their only child. The family moved to New Mexico for health reasons, and Mom's favorite stories were of that area: the 2-room rock house they lived in out in the middle of the desert close to the Organ Mountains, the black cat named Tommy who was her companion, the saloon where they held Sunday School classes that her mother taught, and the school she attended at the Sisters of Loretto in Santa Fe with its famous miraculous staircase.
The family moved to Salem, OR, where Mom graduated from Willamette University at age 20 with a Bachelor's degree in History. She went to a dance with her college friend where she met the friend's brother, Duane Felton, who she later married. They had 5 children and eventually moved to the Tri-Cities with all 5 kids and a cat in tow.
Our home had an open-door policy. If someone needed a place to eat, sleep, take a shower, wash clothes, and be part of a family, they were welcome. Mom and Dad both had a generous spirit, and we often had extra people passing through our family over the years. Gardening was one of Mom's greatest pleasures, and she raised a good portion of the food that we ate.
After raising the children, Mom went back to school to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She worked at Kadlec Medical Center for many years, then went on to the Adult Day Services in Kennewick. After retirement from ADS, she lived with her daughter Merrie and spent many hours on her knees gardening and making things beautiful in the yard. Our brother Dan talked books with her while fixing and finishing her projects, and almost to the end she read several books a week. After 10 years, she went to live in Nehalem, OR, with her daughter Jody, then to Salem, OR, after Jody's retirement. Her final years were spent at the Norse Home Assisted Living Facility in Seattle where Steven and Peg were able to visit with her and watch over her. The loving caregivers at Norse Home were her family when we couldn't be there. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 12, 2022, under the compassionate care of the professionals at Providence Hospice of Seattle. The family is greatly appreciative of the care given to her by both Norse Home and Providence Hospice caregivers,
For all of her life, Mom was very active in the United Methodist Church. She said it was part of her DNA. All of her years in the Tri-Cities, she attended and actively participated in the Riverview United Methodist Church in Pasco as a teacher and lay speaker, among many other roles. She also faithfully attended the Strength for the Journey retreats as their nurse for almost 20 years. She continued to have many friends from those retreats who were very special to her until her death. She also would travel to Montana to be with John and Robin and participate in the Walk to Emmaus.
Merrie Felton was preceded in death by her husband, Duane Felton, who passed away on July 10, 2000, from Alzheimer's disease. She is survived by her children as well as 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mom was well-loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed. To honor her memory, please send any donations to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Services have not yet been determined.
There will be a memorial in Merrie's honor At Riverview United Methodist Church in Pasco, WA on May 16, 2022 at 2:00 pm.
