THE LEADER - HERALD, GLOVERSVILLE - JOHNSTOWN, N. Y. FRIDAY, MAY 29, 1970 - By INEZ K. WATERMAN - A scarlet poppy will certainly be worn by a Fort Plain mother tomorrow and Memorial Day for her will be one of mixed emotions. Because of the many servicemen in her family, that day will have special meaning. The woman is Mrs. Valerie Erhardt, 44, a lifelong resident of Fort Plain. She was married on May 14, 1948 to Gerald Erhardt and they operate their own business in the village. They have five children who are Bruce, 16,a junior in Fort Plain High School, Pamela, 15, a freshman in that school; Judith, 10 and Jaya, 8, who both attend elementary school. On Wednesday, the oldest son, Dale, 20, will leave for Ft. Dix, N.J., to serve with the Army. Mrs. Erhardt is a member of the United Methodist Church of Freysbush and is active in church work and was active in many of its organizations until her present work limited her time. For about 20 years she has been a member of the Otsquago OES Chapter and has held five offices during the past 15 of those years. She assists in working on many committees. She is also affiliated with the Fort Plain Chapter DAR. She is active in the auxiliary of the Mohawk Valley VFW post and her background gives her good reasons for that intense interest. She works long hours and assists in their fund raising projects, dinners and receptions. She will give avid assistance with their Memorial Day plans. Currently, she is senior vice president of that organization and next year she will serve as president. The slim, brown-eyed woman took nurses' training for two and a half years in the Amsterdam City Hospital and holds her license for nursing. She makes compassionate use of this training. Many times she will go to help out elderly sick and forget to charge them for her services. ...
