COAL VALLEY — Ray J. Spratt, 80, of Coal Valley passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014, at Trinity Rock Island.

Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Ave., Moline. A Celebration of Life will be 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one of the following: the family, Honor Flight of the Quad-Cities or to NCF Fund.

Ray was born Nov. 14, 1933, in Campbellsville, Ky., the son of Robert L. and Eva Esther Pierce Spratt. He was a United States Army veteran. Ray retired from International Harvester Farmall Works after 35 years of service. Red truly ran through Ray's veins. He married his sweetheart, Nancy Orth, July 13, 1975, in Elgin, Iowa. Together, they led a life full of touching moments — most all laced with great humor. Ray loved all his time with his children and grandchildren. He was a gentleman to the truest extent of the word, and would be the first to help anyone in need. There wasn't a project he wouldn't tackle, nor a request he couldn't fulfill. To describe Ray as quick-witted, well, that is just a tragic understatement.

Ray's passing leaves those of us behind to deal with a terrific void... But if any comfort can be found in his departure from this world, we can be certain he's relieved he's not having to deal with the remainder of the term of our current president.

“Monk's” survivors include his loving wife, Nancy; daughter, Kelly Evans, Moline; grandchildren, Destiny (Sean) De Buysere, Belleville, Ill., Chance Evans, Moline; three great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Cohen and Marcella; and brother, John Spratt, Tucson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews. Ray is also survived by Rickie, Cindy, Randy, five brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law.

Some very special friends Ray leaves behind are Bill and Cindy Lenger, Jackie Hume and Steve and Kris Christensen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Bernice Wilhelm; and one nephew.
