William, a tailor by trade, enlisted in the Continental Army at Raritan, NJ on 1/25/1777 as a private and fought in the American Revolutionary War as a member of the First NJ Regiment. He fought at Short Hills (26 June 1777, Brandywine Sep 11, 1777, Germantown Oct 4, 1777, Monmouth Sunday, June 28, 1778, and Yorktown Oct 19, 1781). He was discharged 6/5/1783. He received a military pension of $8 a month. He was a tailor by trade and a farmer. He was raised in a Quaker household. He served in Col Matthias Ogden's First New Jersey Regiment, New Jersey Continental Line. His farm was along the east side of the Old Stage Road between Woodbridge and New Brunswick, NJ. In 1793 his name appears as a member of the Middlesex County Militia for Woodbridge. He also served in Capt Joseph Marsh's Company, Third Regiment, New Jersey Infantry, at the time of the Pennsylvania Insurrection in 1794.
