John's headstone appears to be in error as to his birth year of 1861. The 1860 census, taken in July, indicates he was 2 years old. This would suggest he was born in 1858. The 1900 census, taken in June, has him living with wife Mary and their children and states that he was born in 1859 with the additional information that he was 40 years old (of course this math does not add up if he was born in May). The 1910 census indicates he is 50 but it was taken in April before his birthday which would also indicate he was born in 1859.
