Emilie was the daughter of John Christian Joseph, DOB: 1852 - DOD: 1931 and Caroline Catharine Dietrich, DOB: 4/8/1858 - DOD: 1/9/1940 of Cologne, Galloway Township, Atlantic County, NJ.
She was the granddaughter of Conrad Dietrich, DOB: 3/21/1826 - 10/26/1894, of Hessen, Darmstadt, Germany and Mary (or Maria) Yager (Jaeger), DOB: 2/22/1829 - DOD: 3/6/1885, Anspach, Provic Nassau, Germany. Conrad and Mary both died in Cologne or Egg Harbor City, Atlantic County, NJ.
She was also the granddaughter of John Joseph and Kathern Hoffman.
Emilie had two brothers:
George Frederick Peter Joseph, DOB: 2/23/1886 - 2/28/1857, married Anna "Annie" Sauer and
Adolph "Odd" Carl Joseph, DOB: 12/18/1890 - DOD: 1972, married Mathilda "Hilda" Regensberg.
Emilie was Confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church on March 31, 1901.
She married Henry Jacob Gries, DOB: 6/1/1885 - DOD: 1/2/1927, on Easter Sunday, March 21, 1910 at Zion Lutheran Church, Egg Harbor City, NJ. Her husband, Henry, was the printer and publisher of "The Pilot" printed in German and the first newspaper in Atlantic County - later printed as the "Pilot-Tribune," printed in English. Her husband was well known to the east coast newspaper world and a leader in Atlantic County and city Repulican Politics.
They had five children:
Adolph John Henry Gries,DOB: 1/16/1911 - DOD: 12/1995, married Dorothy Bozarth;
George Ernest Gries, DOB: 9/24/1912 - DOD: 4/19/1998, married Marjorie Jane Brooks (both buried in Egg Harbor City, Atlantic County, NJ);
Marion Caroline Gries Kern, DOB: 6/1/1914 - DOD: 6/20/1981, married to Francis J. Kern, (buried Egg Harbor City),
Henry William Gries, DOB: 8/26/1916 - DOD: 3/21/2001, married to Elizabeth DiPietro, (buried Holy Cross, Mays Landing, Atlantic County, NJ);
and,
Ruth Mathilda (Tanner 1st), Walter Tanner, Kienzle (2nd), DOB: 12/6/1919 - DOD: 2/19/1993, married Elmer Kienzle, (buried Germania Cemetery, Galloway Twp., NJ).
Emilie passed away on the ninth anniversary of the publishing of "The New," under the management of her son. During that time she assisted in the work of the paper in many ways using experience gathered during the time her husband, the late Henry Jacob Gries, was editor and publisher of the former Egg Harbor Pilot-Tribune.
She was well known in her community. Emilie was very dedicated to her church, Zion Lutheran Church, Egg Harbor City, NJ. She served Zions' Ladies Aid Society as secretary for more than 25 years. She also served on the first Executive Committee of the local Amercian Red Cross and she was secretary for eight years. A member of the Parent Teachers Association and Shackamxon Council, No. 51, and Washington Camp No. 63
I remember my grandmother reading the bible and praying - sitting in the last pew and last seat of her church.
Emilie died from complications due to her diabetic condition in route to Lanhenau Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.
