***** Eddieb, I served with Robert Yates in the Engineer unit he was assigned to at Long Binh RVN. He kept saying "I'm infantry, I'm not an Engineer, I trained for infantry, I'm infantry." I told him several times to relax, he would see plenty of action with our unit, and his infantry training would get plenty of use. He transferred to an infantry unit. Shortly after he left I was sitting on my bunk paging through a Life Magazine issue. There were pictures of all of those who had given their lives during one week in Vietnam. I recognized Bobby, I choked up some but tried not to show it. I'm glad to have known him, he was a good person, a brave young man. I wish he had listened to me, but the solace that I can get from this is that Bobby died for our country doing what he really wanted to do. I haven't been to Texas in years, but I go to Washington DC some and when I do I always stop by the Wall and tell him Hi.

***** I met Bob when he came in country in Jan 1969 about a week after I did. Although he was infantry, he was, for some reason, assigned to my Combat Engineer unit at Long Binh. We pulled night guard on a tower at Long Binh for about 2 months. Bob was barely 18, 2 years younger than me. He always used to say to me, 'Fraser by the time I'm your age I'll have been out of the army for a year.' In April of 1969 he was sent to the infantry, since that was his MOS, and I never saw him again. In August of 1969 I found out he'd been killed in May. God bless you my friend

I did not know Robert very well because I had been in Vietnam less than two months when he was killed. We were on fire support base Airborne in the A Shau Valley right after the Hamburger Hill battle. Robert died with two other soldiers when the bunker/fighting position they were sleeping in took a direct hit from a mortar round. I have never forgotten the incident.

***** I came home on leave looking for you and learned of your death. To get revenge, I voluteered for Nam after that on 71469 at Carswell AFB, Tx. and received my orders on 1069. I arrived in SEA 1 yr. and 1 day after you did, 11870. I just paid my tribute to you at the WALL June 28, 2012. It was 43 yrs. 1 mo. and 1 day after your death that my family and I paid our respects to you and all our comrades that didn't come home. You are not forgotten, for my daughters are looking up to you for you are their hero.

Message is: Trying to find anyone who knew Robert C. Yates. He was one of my best friends and it was hard to take the pain when I learned of his death and it hurts just as bad now,32 years later. I was at tech school at the time when he was killed. When I reported to my duty station at Carswell A.F.B. Tx, I volunteered for Vietnam to get revenge. I served in SEA Jan.70 to Jan. 71. and went to bomb North Vietnam in Feb. 1972, during Operation Bulletshot later Operation Linebacker.
