He was the grandson Heinrick Gries and Louise Ripple (Rippel). Henry was the great-grandson of Ernest Gries and Clara Kutscher of Germany and also, Peter Rippel and Carolina Heys.

Also, grandson of Caroline Catharine Dietrich and John Christian Joesph and great-grandson of Conrad Dietrich and Mary Yager or Maria Jaeger and John Joseph and Katherine Hoffman Joseph.

Nick named by his Uncle George Joseph as "Jimmie."

Henry was Baptised on September 24, 1916 and Confirmed on April 13, 1930 at Zion Lutheran Church, Egg Harbor City, New Jersey.

Henry had two brothers, Adolph John Henry Gries and George Ernest Gries (Egg Harbor City Cememtery, Atlantic County, NJ) and two sisters, Marion Caroline Gries Kern (Egg Harbor City Cemetery, Atlantic County, NJ and Ruth Mathilda Gries (Tanner 1st) Kienzle (2nd) (Germania Cemetery, Atlantic County, NJ).

He was the brother-in-law of Anna and John Furgione of Hammonton, NJ. Louis and Rose DiPietro, of Egg Harbor City. The uncle to Marjorie Gries Garwood, Linda DiPietro Andrews, John and (name) Furgione.

He married Elizabeth (Bette) DiPieto, DOB: 6/12/24, at 159 St. Louis Avenue, Egg Harbor City, on October 16, 1949, at the St. Nicholas Church Rectory, on St. Louis Avenue, Egg Harbor City, Atlantic County, NJ. They had no children.

Henry was a member of the Egg Harbor City Historical Society, the Hammonton Chapter of Deborah Auxiliary, the Kickapoo Tribe #237 of the Redmen. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Egg Harbor City, NJ. Henry was also a member of the Victor McAnney VFW Post #5431, of the Veterans Corps 69th Regiment "The Fighting Sixty-Ninth,: New York City and Past Commander of the Rudolph Elmer Amercian Legion Post #158.

Henry served in Pacific during WWII, a Sergeant in F Company, Infantry Division. His company received the "Distinguished Unit Citation" for their heroic actions at Item Pocket at Okinawa. Only 46 men survived of 160 who initiated the attack.

Henry enjoyed golf and fishing in his boat, the "MarBet," jointly owned with his brother George.

I remember my Uncle enjoying his nieces and nephews, kidding with them and they all loved their Uncle Henry.
