William Lou Vellon Callis was born on December 24, 1888 in White House, Robertson County, Tennessee, the son of Albert Alonzo "Lon" Callis (1864–1939) and his 1st wife Ida (Marlin) Callis (1866–1913).

He was married to Eva Ruth Warren (1891-1956) on December 23, 1912 in Sumner County, and she was the daughter of William Martin Warren (1866–1950) and Nancy Caroline (Kelly) Warren (1864–1919). Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Nashville.

A shoemaker at Carter Shoe Company and a member of Edgefield Baptist Church, William was living at 908 Lischey Avenue in Nashville. He was 54 years old and married when he died of a pulmonary edema on September 16, 1943 at Nashville General Hospital were he had been a patient for 24 hours.

Survivors included his widow Eva Callis and daughter Mrs J D Crunk, both in Nashville, sons Private 1st Class William Callis of Fort Lincoln, Nebraska and Homer Callis at Nashville, sister Mrs Henry Ragland in White House and brothers Odell Callis, Roscoe Callis, Richard Callis, Leonard Callis, Millard Callis and Davis Callis, all in Nashville.

Funeral Services were held on September 18th at Burkitt Son & Cullum Funeral Home, and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Madison.
