Margaret was a very special person full of a quixotic vibrancy. She grew up in New Haven close to Yale University and gorgeous East Rock. The Evans family was happy, and a joy to spend time with. Margaret was very close to her two bubbly sisters-one of whom was my mother's best friend.

She had everything with a full life journey ahead of her until she met and married her husband Charles who had a long history of mental illness.

On the night of April 6th/7th 1954, her husband Charles (whom she had separated from due to his erratic behavior) was waiting for her in the darkness and killed her with a hammer.

Due to a reluctance to have a long trial (with Margaret being scrutinized in court and by curious media)and their profound sadness, the family shied away from a big trial and Spencer got only 10-12 years in jail.

Domestic violence is a tragedy for everyone. Too often the victims are forgotten. That is why Margaret Spencer now has this memorial page. Let's not ever forget her! May she rest in peace.

-God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
