JUSTUS WEED by Georgia C. von Schmidt, (May 6, 2013)

Justus Weed was born in 1743 into a fairly well-to-do family in the portion of Stamford, CT, now known as Darien, or Noroton, and lived about half of his life there. He was the third son of Epenetus Weed, Senior and Mary Belding. Justus bought the house now located at 83 Linden Avenue at the corner of Hollow Tree Ridge Road, which had been built by his brother, Epenetus Weed, Jr., in about 1760, on land Epenetus Weed, Jr. had been given by his father, Epenetus Weed, Sr. who lived just south on what is now Hollow Tree Ridge Road, in Darien. The road was also known as Weeds Hill, because of all the members of the Weed family residing there.

Justus Weed in 1761 at the age of 18 fought in the French and Indian War, Conn. 12th Co., 2nd Reg. under Col. Nathan Whiting and Joseph Hait. Justus's older brother, Benjamin, had died in that war in 1758 when Benjamin was 17 years old at Lake George, New York. Justus Weed also enlisted in 1780, in the American Revolutionary War, at the age of 39, serving as a Private in the 2nd Conn. Reg. in Col. Hait's Company under Col. Zebulon Butler.

Justus was a Revolutionary War damage appraiser from 1779 to 1781, appraising over 30 claims of damage or plundering by British troops or Loyalist sympathizers. The Darien section of Stamford, being on the coast of Long Island Sound, was regularly raided by British sympathizers, often arriving by boat from Long Island, New York, just about 9 miles away over the water. Common targets of theft were horses, sheep, cattle, clothing, food and other provisions. If a citizen had a proven war damage claim, the citizen could receive a tax abatement from Connecticut. Justus Weed himself filed a damage claim for "goods taken by Ye Enemy" on July 10, 1781, being "1 Bagg & 1-1/2 Bushulell of Wheat."

Shortly after the end of the Revolutionary War, Justus Weed sold his Darien home to James Shaw, another Revolutionary War damage appraiser, and, together with his wife and children, relocated to Fredericksontown, later Patterson, in Putnam County, New York where he lived out the rest of his life as a farmer. This was an area known as the Oblong, a narrow strip of land where for a time there was uncertainty as to whether the area belonged to Connecticut or New York. Justus Weed died in 1819 at the age of 76.
