"Mr. John D. Earhart Dies.
We regret to state that the wounds received by Mr. John D. Earhart from the accidental discharge of a pistol at which he was looking in the store of his brother, Mr. Ben McD. Earhart, in Concordia parish, last Saturday morning, proved fatal, the unfortunate gentleman dying the same night. His body was brought up to the city Sunday afternoon, and interred in the Natchez cemetery, the members of Phoenix No. 7, besides representatives of the several orders of which he was a member, together with many friends, escorting his remains to their last resting place. Mr. Earhart was a native of Natchez, the son of the late Mr. Wm. Earhart, and was about thirty-six years of age. The DEMOCRAT tenders its sympathies to his brother, Mr. Ben D. Earhart, and the other surviving relatives of the deceased."

Note: Mr. Earhart's brother, Ben McD. Earhart, changed his name to "Charles B. Earhart" between 1895 and 1900. According to a contemporary news report (/Weekly Democrat/, Natchez, Miss., 8 May 1895, page [3], col. 1.), he married, on 24 April 1895 in Hanford, California, as "Ben McD. Earhart":
"Brought Back a Bride With Him
Mr. Ben McD. Earhart, the popular and efficient depot agent of the New Orleans and Northwestern Railroad at Winnsboro, La., and so well and favorably known in Natchez, returned to Winnsboro on Tuesday last from California, bringing back with him a fair and lovely bride. The wedding took place at the residence of John F. Mickle at Hanford, Cal., on Wednesday April 24, 1895, and the bride was Miss Annie E. Williams of Dinuba, Cal. This announcement will no doubt be a surprise to many of Mr. Earhart's friends in Natchez, but all will hasten to tender congratulations and with them the DEMOCRAT hartily [/sic/] joins."

Ben McD./ Charles Earhart was enumerated in Tampa, Florida, in the 1900 federal census as "Charles Airheart" (born September 1861 in Mississippi). His household included his California-born wife, Annie, and two sons, including "Harrold Airheart," born June 1897 in Louisiana. (1900 U.S. census, Hillsborough Co., Fla., pop. sch., Tampa City, ward 2, ED 67, sheet 16-A, dwell. 319, fam. 345, Charles "Airheart" household; NARA microfilm publication T623, roll 170.
