Grietje married Dirk Jochums Tammenga on June 3, 1876 in Hennaarderadeel, Friesland, Netherlands.

Hawarden Independent; June 16, 1927

Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon from the First Reformed Church at Hospers for Mr. and Mrs. Richard "Dick" Tammenga of Orange City, who passed away at the home of their daughter, Mrs. John Bergsma, at Hospers Tuesday evening, June 7th.

That this worthy Christian couple should be laid to rest in one grave was a fitting close to a happy married life of nearly half a century. Mr. and Mrs. Tammmenga had been ailing through the winter months and every care that a loving family of children could give was administered to ease their suffering during the last weeks. Three weeks ago it was deemed necessary to perform an operation upon Mr. Tammemga and in order that his wife might be closer to him Mrs. Tammenga was taken to Hospers while Mr. Tammenga went to a hospital at Sheldon. It was found, however, that the disease had made such inroads that in his weakened condition it was useless to operate and he was also taken to the home of his daughter, where both of the aged people slipped quietly to their eternal rest at the closing of the day last Tuesday.

Mr. Tammenga was born at Friesland, Holland, December 9, 1856, and Mrs. Tammenga was born at the same place July 3, 1860. Both attended the same school and were brought up in the same community where they were married. Ten years after their marriage, they together with their four children, embarked for America, the land of promise, settling in New Jersey. Illness, misfortune and hard work was their lot. Sorrow, too, entered their home, death claiming their eldest son Galef. Three years later they moved to Le Mars where they resided until 1905 when they moved onto a farm one-half west of Le Mars. In 1917 they moved onto a farm near Hospers, retiring from active work three years later and moving to Orange City where they since have made their home.

Early in life they were affiliated with the Reformed Church and were active in the organization of of this denomination in the early years at LeMars, later joining the First Reformed Church at Orange City. The pastor, Rev. Colenbrander, paid a glowing tribute to their splendid Christian life.

Children who survived are Mrs. John Bergsma; Mrs. Henry Berkenpas and Mrs. John Wallinga, and Jacob Tammenga. An adopted daughter, Mrs. Minnie Van Citters, also survives.

Mrs. Tammenga also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Marie Bergsma and one sister in the Netherlands. Mr. Tammenga leaves one brother, Dowe. Sixteen grandchildren, besides the two children of Mrs. Van Citters, also survive.
