On 12 August 1861 John Franklin volunteered with Captain Blankenbeker's Company C of the 10th Regiment of Virginia Infantry. The Jeff Davis Guards. The reorganization of 1862 made the Company L of the 10th. In November of 1862 he made Corporal. He was wounded at the Second Battle of Winchester 15 June 1863. That wound kept him out of commission until late 1864. Apparently some of it without leave. The again Private Colvin was made a prisoner of war in May of 1865. He was paroled on 18 May. He stated he was a resident of Madison.
