He was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, and after 17 years of service died of a disease contracted during the first cruise of our squadron on the coast of Africa under the stipulation of the Ashburton treaty which concerns the slave trade. He was named after Dr. Benjamin Smith Barton, one of the Professors in the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania when his father, Dr. William Darlington, was a student there, and an intimate friend of the doctor. Lieutenant Darlington usually went by the name of Barton.
