Charles A. “Bud” Helfer, 88, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born July 2, 1926, to Charles Arthur Helfer and Goldie (Willey) Helfer in Adams. He married Lois (Wiley) Helfer on June 18, 1949, and she survives.

Other survivors include two sons: Gene Helfer and wife, Debbie, of Shelbyville; and John Helfer and wife, Sarah, of Shelbyville; sister, Jane Dean of St. Omer; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Helfer had been a resident of this area since the 1940s, after moving from Indianapolis. He attended Arsenal Technical High School.

Mr. Helfer was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy on board the USS South Dakota in the South Pacific.

He worked for American National Resources Pipeline for many years, retiring in 1982.

Mr. Helfer was a member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church.

He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post No. 70, Eagles Lodge and the Shelby Senior Services Horizon Center.

Bud loved playing euchre at The Horizon Center, and he loved his dog, Maggie. He enjoyed eating out and local restaurants. He loved his many friends, his wife of 65 years, his family and his grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, Shelbyville, IN 46176.

Funeral services will follow at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bryan Trotter officiating.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at Union Chapel Cemetery in Decatur County. Graveside military rites will be conducted by local veterans organizations.

Memorial contributions may be given to Mount Gilead Baptist Church or Shelby Senior Services in care of the funeral home.
