Montrose Beckwith, 76, Labor Leader, Succumbs

Montrose "Mont" Beckwith, veteran Akron printer and founder of the Eagle Printing Co., died at City hospital late Sunday after a month's illness. He would have been 77 on March 24.

A resident of Akron for 63 years, Mr. Beckwith had been closely associated with the labor movement here. He joined the International Typographical Union in 1895 and served for many years as secretary-treasurer of the Akron branch. Later he helped organize the Central Labor Union which became the Trades and Labor Assembly.

He published a labor paper for several years after establishing the Eagle Printing company in the Hower Buildng, 31 W. Market St.

Mr. Beckwith was a member and former president of Akron Aerie Fraternal Order of Eagles, a Moose trustee and a member of the 50 year club, and the Monroe United Presbyterian church.

He was born in Mercer, Pa., but came to Akron to learn his trade at the old Werner Publishing Co., here. He lived at 985 Bloomfield av.

Survivors include Mr. Beckwith's widow, Edith, three children in Akron, Mrs. Harriett B. Wilson, Mrs. Arch Myers and Ralph Beckwith, and six other children. The latter are Mrs. Ray Staub, Texarkana, Tex., Mrs. Roberta McCormick, Cleveland, Mrs. Richard Abott, Richmond, Va., Lieut. Carl Beckwith, U. S. Army, and Glenn Beckwith, Millegeville, Ga. Thirteen grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren also survive.

Rev. Clarance McCreight will conduct funeral services at 1 p. m. Wednesday at the Billow Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Peace Cemetery, (Transcribed by Ronn E. Friend).
