Erma was born July 30, 1921 to Ona (Stephenson) and Byrl Baumgardner in Grain Valley, Missouri. She lived in Jackson County all her life. She graduated from Grain Valley high school in 1938. Erma attended Warrensburg Teacher’s College and was a member of the synchronized swim team. She married Robert S. Doty in 1946. Erma and Bob had 4 children. A fifth child was added in 1966 when a Greek Foreign Exchange Student became part of their family. Costas lived in their home while attending GVHS.
Erma was a teacher of many students at Knob Noster and the GV School District. She loved teaching and helping students to learn and prepare for life. The community of Grain Valley was so dear to Erma and was a huge part of her life. She even wrote a history of Stony Point when she was 12 years old and it was published in a local newspaper. In retirement, Erma and Bob enjoyed friends, family, traveling, and spending summers at their lake home. After a number of years in retirement and with teaching still a passion, she began teaching piano at Meyer Music and her home. All the while, she remained a volunteer at St. Mary’s hospital.
Erma was preceded in death by her husband; Robert S. Doty, son; Robert L. Doty, son; Dennis A. Doty, granddaughter; Audra L. Doty, her parents; and her brother; Dale Baumgardner.
