Actor. Starred in theatre, film, television and radio. He was a Shakespearean actor of much acclaim but he will be best remembered for his film and television work which included the film 'The Cruel Sea' (1953) with Jack Hawkins, television comedy series 'Two's Company' (1975- 79) alongside Elaine Stritch, 'Never the Twain' (1981–1991) and drama 'Judge John Deed' (2001-2007). He received a knighthood in 1997.
