Sterling S. Frantz, 89, of Pine Grove, passed away Thursday at Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street.
Born in Pine Grove, May 11, 1925, he was a son of the late Samuel and Dora Schaeffer Frantz.
He was a 1942 graduate of Pine Grove High School and a member of Hetzel's Lutheran Church, Pine Grove.
Sterling was a World War II Navy veteran having served with the NTS, Sampson, N.Y., and the USS Richmond. His rank was a SM3C and he received the Pacific Theater Ribbon with one star, the American Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a life member of both the Pine Grove VFW Post 3432 and the American Legion Post 374.
Sterling had an insurance business in Pine Grove for 33 years. He was also a Justice of the Peace, tax collector and did tax preparation in Pine Grove.
He was a member of the Roedersville Gun Club.
Preceding him in death were a sister, Marion Rehrer; and a brother, Ernest Frantz.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Joan Keefer Frantz; a son, John J., husband of Carol Frantz; a daughter, Susan, wife of Tom Umbenhauer, all of Pine Grove; five grandchildren, John Frantz, Russell Frantz, Jennifer Kohr, Kristen Kohr and Neil Engelen; six great-grandchildren, Derek Frantz, Morgan Frantz, Austin Frantz, Brayden Frantz, Tayden Spittler and Torin Spittler; and a sister, June Perun, Pine Grove.
H. L. Snyder Funeral Home, Pine Grove, had charge of arrangements. Funeral services were held at the funeral home at the convenience of the family, with SALM John Ziegler officiating. Interment was in the Hetzel's Cemetery, Pine Grove.
