W. G. Mathias was assistant to the vice-president of the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Company. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, November 29, 1871, the son of David Stephen Mathias and Tryphena (Jones) Mathias.

He came from a family identified with the steel industry for many generations. His brother, David R., was general superintendent of the Joliet Works of the Illinois Steel Company and his other brother, Thomas H., was vice-president of the Lackawanna Steel Company, Buffalo, NY. His father, David S. Mathias, who died at his home in Chicago, December 5, 1917, aged 73 years, was at the lime of his death consulting superintendent of the South Works plant of the Illinois Steel Company.

On October 31, 1894, he married Miss Mary Irene Jenner, of Brooklyn, NY. They had one son, Waldo Jenner Mathias.
