During a ferrying flight from Casper Army Air Base, Wyoming to Tinker Airfield at Oklahoma City, the crew encountered intense weather. Apparently, the pilots attempted to turn around, as the bomber was observed heading in the reverse direction from their intended course. The bomber was observed to go sideways briefly, then stall and go into a steep dive, from which they did not recover and crashed into ground, nine miles northwest of Bogue, Kansas.
The aircrew killed were:
1st Lt. Paul M Capaccio, Pilot
Flt. Off. Lt. Latimer L. Stewart, Co-Pilot
1st Lt. Jacob M Madsen Jr, Navigator
S/Sgt. Heiner M Bloch, Passenger
S/Sgt. Frank E Culver, Radio Operator
T/Sgt. Thaddeus I Donlavage, Flight Engineer
