Thomas Edward Alexander, 54, of Lexington, owner if Alexander's Tree and Shrub Service, died Wednesday, Sept 22, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital after suffering injuries in a fall from a tree on the Virginia Military Institute post the day before.

While Mr. Alexander was working in a tree behind the row of houses lining the VMI parade ground, the branch he was tied off to fell. “He rode the branch down” said Col. James King, director of physical plant at VMI.

Mr. Alexander was born in Rockbridge County on April 5, 1939, the son of B. Elizabeth Miller Alexander of Lexington and the late Joyce Hite Alexander. He was married to Edna Early Alexander.

He established Alexander’s Tree and Shrub Service and operated it for over 20 years. The company provided service to a wide area including Roanoke, Staunton and areas of West Virginia. Major clients had included VMI and Washington and Lee.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the occupation forces in Germany. He was a member of the Lexington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8777, and a member of the Gospel Way Church of God in Christ.

For a number of years he coached little league football, basketball, and baseball teams, and has sponsored adult teams in Lylburn Downing program

In addition to his wife and mother survivors include two daughter, Damorah E. Alexander of Offutt Air Force Base, Neb. and Valencia Alexander Long of Lexington; one son, Darryl E. Alexander of Lexington; two sisters Lillian Alexander and Carman A. Nowlin, both of Lexington; three brothers, J. Hite Alexander, Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa., Jon D. Alexander and James Alexander, both of Lexington; and six grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted on Monday, Sept. 27, by Elder Leon McCarley and the Rev. James Harria. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
