Officer Berisford Anderson was shot and killed while off-duty by a person he stopped for driving the wrong way down a one-way street.

Officer Anderson had just gotten off duty and had changed into civilian clothes and taken his ballistic vest off. He confronted a young man, who, unknown to Anderson, was wanted on outstanding warrants out of Framingham, Massachusetts. The male had been speeding down a one-way street, going the wrong way.

When Officer Anderson identified himself as a police officer, the male pulled out a handgun and shot Officer Anderson point-blank in the chest.

A Boston Police officer returning to Boston from a funeral for Chief of Police Robert J. Mortell, apprehended the killer a short time later.

Officer Anderson had served with the agency for 14 years. He is survived by his wife and five children. [odmp.org]

On a winter evening in 1994, off-duty police officer Berisford Anderson was about to walk up the steps of his Boston apartment house when he spotted a car driving the wrong way down the narrow, one-way street.

Anderson stopped the car, but when he confronted the driver, the suspect became enraged. After a brief argument, he shot Anderson with a .380-semiautomatic Lorcin handgun. A single bullet severed Anderson's aorta. He bled to death as his friend, kneeling in the snow, cradled his head.

Anderson became the 69th police officer to be killed in Boston, but what outraged the public was that the 18-year-old driver was a wanted fugitive whom no one had bothered to track down.
