Carl Abbott Dies In Tractor Mishap

A Shelby County farmer was killed in a tractor accident late Friday afternoon.

Carl Abbott, 57, R. R. 5, Sidney, died shortly after his tractor tipped over onto him in a field at his Mason Road farm northwest of Port Jefferson.

Abbott's sons, Nick and Phil, were unsuccessful in attempts to save their father's life by trying to move the tractor off him.

Sheriff's deputies say the accident took place about 5:20 p.m. as Nick, 18, was operating a tractor which was preparing to pull another tractor ridden by his father.

As the chain between the two vehicles tightened, the second tractor flipped over backwards, pinning Abbott beneath it, reports said.

Abbott's tractor was equipped with a front end loader which was raised, probably causing the vehicle to become top heavy and tip over, deputies report.

The sheriff's department was notified by Port Jefferson Police Chief Virgil Gates about 15 minutes after the mishap. Sheriff Don Laws, who also is county coroneer's investigator, said Abbott was dead when he arrived at the scene.

Laws said Abbott possibly died from suffocation. His head fell against a log and his body was partly twisted when the tractor pinned him, according to reports. The body was removed by ambulance to the morgue at Wilson Memorial Hospital.

The tractor fatality was the second this year in the county.

Mr. Abbott was born June 22, 1912, in Shelby County to Samuel and Ollie Miars Abbott. He was Married June 13, 1937, to Grace Davidson.

Other survivors are four brothers, Forrest of Sidney, Roy of Dayton, Howard of Buena Park, Calif., and Benjamin of Trotwood; and a sister, Mrs. Paul (Bernice) Packer of Sidney.
