SENIOR SGT MAJOR US ARMY.
George S. Van Kirk, 82, died Friday, March 10, 2006, of surgical complications. He was born Aug. 24, 1923, in Merrittstown, Pa., the son of George and Helen Van Kirk. He married Maria Grapaldi July 8, 1951, at Fort Dix, N.J.
George served his country 28 years in the U.S. Army. His army assignments included service in the 9th (Phantom) Armored Division, 3rd Army, during World War II; the 714th Tank Battalion at Fort Bragg, N.C.; NATO Headquarters Athens, Greece and Oslo, Norway; Honor Guard at the Presidio, San Francisco, Calif; Korean Military Assistance Group, Seoul, Korea; post sergeant major, Fort Lawton, Seattle, Wash.; Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D.C. At the time of his retirement, George was one of the Army's most senior Sergeants Major with date of rank September 1959.
After retiring from the Army in 1969, George moved his family to Athens. He worked 13 years as a maintenance mechanic for 3M in Decatur. He was an avid golfer (2 holes in one), community volunteer, and an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Athens.
He is survived by his wife Maria; children, George P. Van Kirk, of Madison, and Michael J. Van Kirk, of Athens; and six grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Florence Van Kirk.
Family visitation will be held at the Limestone Chapel Funeral Home, Highway 31 North in Athens, today, March 12, 2006, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 13, 2006, at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Athens, Rev. Sam Hobson and Father Charlie Alookaran officiating. Mr. Van Kirk will lie in state at the church from 9 to 10 a.m. on Monday. Interment at the Roselawn Cemetery, Athens.
Pallbearers will be Price Boyd, J.W. Watson, Bill Dunnavant, Mitchell Fuller, Shelby Wilson, Michael Van Kirk, George Van Kirk and Todd Rose.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Limestone County or the First Presbyterian Church, Athens.
