Dr. Murdock was a native of Schenectady, New York and received his undergraduate degree from Union College in 1814, according to Union College publications, and his medical degree from Yale College in 1817. Dr. Murdock was likely an alcoholic, he assaulted his wife and was imprisoned for a time in the 1830's- returning a "broken man" who never fully recovered from the ordeal. He stopped drinking and practiced medicine in Clarkson in the 1840's, 1850's and 1860's before retiring to Rochester's 3rd ward where he lived at the time of his death. He had one son James Ellice Murdock, born in Boston, and at least 3 daughters, Sophia, Mary and Harriett. Youngest "daughter" Katherine, actually his illegitimate granddaughter Memorial ID 135994443, was adopted.
