Earl was the fourth child of John Thomas Overley and Nannie Isabelle Stoltz. This photo is of Private Earl Overley c.1917 in Wichita, Kansas prior to sailing for France on April 25, 1918 as part of the Allied Expeditionary Force. (137th Infantry, Co. A, 35th Division) Sailed on the RMS Karmala. They sighted a German Sub on the way over and sank her. After 13 days landed at Liverpool England on May 2, 1918. Train to South Hampton and boarded the Elizabeth to cross the English Channel to La Havre, France. Earl fought in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and was wounded and gassed (Chlorine) about October 2, 1918 according to a telegram from the military. Spent October/November 1918 at Base hospital #30, Royat, France. He left France on December 17, 1918 and arrived Hoboken, NY on December 24, 1918. He returned to Wichita after recovery from Tuberculosis at Fort Bayard, in New Mexico. In 1922 he married Goldye E. Mann. He joined the U.S. Postal Service in 1929 and retired in 1959. There were no children.

Historical Footnote: Over 1.3 million soldiers were exposed to chemical agents in WWI including Earl Overley. Over 100,000 died as a result. On July 7, 2023 the United States was the last of eight countries with declaired chemical weapons to complete their distruction. The United States had 30,000 tons of chemical weapons in 1990. In 1997 the Senate ratified the treaty for their destruction. It took 26 years to complete the task. The world is a safer place.
