Fell To Death Over High Cliff - Clinton Smith, Formerly of Grand Forks, Met Death - Wife Not Found Yet - Portland, OR July 16th - The body of Clinton B. Smith of Portland, who was lost in a blizzard on Mount St. Helens Sunday, July 6, was found on Tuesday. The searching party had been out nine days. The body was located at the foot of a precipice and the neck and one arm had been broken by the fall over the cliff. He was at one time a resident of Grand Forks, ND where he had a great many friends. He was son of Col. Smith, a pioneer of Grand Forks and was a brother of Cora Eaton Smith, well known in North Dakota. Mr. Smith was killed by the fall over the precipice. He was accompanied by his wife on his trip into the mountains, but they became separated in some way during the storm. It is expected that his wife's body will be found soon. From indications and the location of the body it was apparent that Smith and his wife, after being left in the blizzard by S. R. Cornell and Miss Monroe, on Sunday, July 6th had made an effort to reach the lower levels and had come part way down the mountain when Smith evidently fell over the cliff on the rocks where his body was found the broken neck indicating death came instantly. The party of searchers on Mount St. Helens making the discovery of the ultimate fate of Mr. Smith, consisted of Randolph Carroll, who was Smith's guide during the ascent of the mountain when the Smiths were lost in the storm, W.D. Peaslee, S.R. Moffit and Francis Benefil, all of Portland, and all experience mountain climber and who have ascended Mount St. Helens many times in the past. If Mrs. Smith's body is also found soon the two will be carried together out of the mountains accompanied by a party of searchers and friends. Miss Monroe and Randolph Carroll, who were the last to see the Smiths, have remained at Ole Peterson's camp owing to a broken axle on the auto. They will probably now remain until the search for Mrs. Smith's body is over and accompany the party on it's homeward journey.
Grand Forks Herald (Grand Forks, ND) 21 Jul 1913, page 8: Mrs. C. Smith's Body Is Found - Portland, OR, July 21 - The body of Mrs. Clinton B. Smith of Portland, who with her husband became lost in a blizzard on Mount St. Helena ten days ago, was found near the spot where her husband's body had been located three days ago. Both had fallen over a precipice. The bodies of Mr. and Mrs Smith were brought here by auto. Mrs. Smith's body was found 1,000 feet below where her husband was found with his neck broken. It is believed she died after her husband had fallen over the cliff. The body was partly covered with snow. The bodies were carried out fourteen miles on the backs of men who were weak from lack of food and the terrible trail. Six men stared with the bodies and reinforcements met the men lower on the mountain.
