He was born on June 24, 1940, in Athens, Ga., to Thaddeus and Emma (Wood) Bates. He grew up in various neighborhoods throughout Athens and Smyrna, Ga. As a child he enjoyed working alongside his mother in the Georgia cotton fields.

Wayne joined the Army in 1959 and served for 28 total years. He served with the Active Army, Active Guard Reserve in the Montana National Guard and with the Army Reserves, serving in various jobs such as a cook, billeting manager and an Army Reserve recruiter. He was the recipient of Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and the Montana National Guard Distinguished Service Medal. He served his last 10 years at Fort Harrison for the Montana National Guard. He retired in 2000, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class.

Wayne held various positions in a number of career paths. He worked in the grocery industry for over 20 years with companies such as Albertson’s, Big Apple, Richway Foods and Kmart. He worked as a police officer in the town of Austell, Ga., from 1964-1967. After moving to Bozeman from Georgia in 1973, he worked as a deputy sheriff for Gallatin County from 1974-1978, and also served as the Belgrade mayor for one year in 1975. In 1988, Wayne attended truck driving school in Denver, Colo., and drove truck for Werner Enterprises. After completing his career with the military he began to serve the State of Montana working at the Montana State Prison as a correctional officer from 1996 until his retirement in 2005.

Wayne married Jean (Dillard) in 1961, in Smyrna, Ga. They were married for seven years and had two children. Wayne married Theresa (Wald) in 1971, in Smyrna, Ga., and spent the last 43 years with her and had two children. Wayne was a member of Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post #0001, as well as AARP. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling and seeing different places with family. Since his retirement he enjoyed visiting his children and attending various events for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and watching them grow. He was very dedicated to his love of animals, having various dogs with the last being his loyal friend Riley. He enjoyed collecting coffee mugs from various places, old coins, ships, eagles, hats, and die cast cars. He was a history buff and enjoyed reading; the last couple of years he had enjoyed the latest novels written by Bill O’Reilly. He also enjoyed putting together various models. Wayne was a man of few words; he never spoke harsh of others. He had a very kind and giving heart to those that were lucky enough to know him.
