Mary (Doll) was the first child of John Frances Keyes and Melissa Jane Fulkerson who came to Kansas from Ray County Missouri in 1876. They were some of the first non-native settlers in Pratt and Barber County and obtained a 160 acre homestead. For a short time the family lived in their covered wagon and later in a sod house on a hill by Elm creek. On March 31, 1892 Mary married Oliver Francis Stoops. On september 16, 1893 they were in the "run" (opening) of the Cherokee Oklahoma Strip with a team of horses a buggy and $100.00. They staked a claim south of Alva and built a one room house with gunny sacks for floor covering. They moved back to Pratt County Kansas c.1901 and farmed until retirement to Wichita in 1917. They had nine children six to adult.
