John Elliott "Jack" Atwater, 81, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, November 3, 2003.

Native of Spartanburg, son of the late Charles Bynum and Sallie Belle Dillard Atwater, husband of the late Mildred Elizabeth Burgess Atwater.

Retired from Liberty Mutual Insurance and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, John E. Atwater Jr. and Stephen D. Atwater, both of Boiling Springs; two granddaughters, Sallie B. Houston of Canada, and Mildred E. Staggs of Atlanta; a grandson, Thomas B. Huguenin Jr. of Murrells Inlet; and six great-grandchildren.

Predeceased by a stepdaughter, Carole C. Huguenin.

Visitation was 2:00 to 2:45 p.m. Friday, November 7, 2003, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

Funeral services followed at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence F. Hays Jr. and the Rev. David B. Smith. Burial was at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials could be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, Special Education Department, 245 S. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29306.
