RECENT DEATHS.
Jewett.
Mrs. Elizabeth Bates Jewett died after
two days' illness at her home Jan. 11th
inst., aged 63 years.
Mrs. Jewett was a native of Randolph
and came to St. Johnsbury in 1861, as
instructor in the Academy.
About two years after, she married
Dea. Samuel Jewett, merchant, who died
in August, 1879, since which time she
and her children have resided in their
home on Main street.
The influence of her cultivated mind
and strong religious character has been
felt during all these years, and by her
gentleness and sympathetic nature she
has made herself greatly beloved. She
had intelligent interest in educational
and social affairs and has added much to
the best life of our village. Her loss is
very deeply felt in the South church, of
which she has been a most valued
member, and in the Bible class which she has
led for so many years, with which she
met as usual only the Sunday before her
death.
Her surviving children, Luther and
Mary Louise, have the sympathy of all
our people.
