Oscar A. Becker, Assistant County Treasurer, Is Dead

Oscar A. Becker, assistant county treasurer and for more than forty years a leader in the Republican party in Springfield and Sangamon county, died at 7 a.m. yesterday in St. John's hospital. He was 65 years old.

Mr. Becker, who resided at 623 South Fifth street, had been in failing health for some time, but his condition did not become serious until Jan. 27, when he entered the hospital.

Remains were removed to the Thomas C. Smith Sons chapel, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. Rev. Vernon L. Shontz, pastor of Central Baptist church, will officiate, and burial will be in Roselawn Memorial park.

Mr. Becker's death terminated a prominent career in public service during which time he served as county clerk and aide to a number of county officials. Recognized as an authority on county tax matters, his advice was sought frequently on revenue matters whenever decisions of importance were made governing revenue problems.

Before entering the field of political activity, he operated a livery stable on Eighth street near Adams street. He served as chief deputy county clerk under Clerk Charles W. Byers from 1910 to 1922. In 1926 he was elected to that office. He also was employed for a brief period in the state treasurer's office where he gained additional knowledge of county tax problems and was chief clerk, for a period, of the city election commission.

He was the son of Charles H. and Malinda Wilms Becker, and was born July 19, 1875, at Fosterburg, Ill. His father was the owner of the old Western hotel located on the southwest corner of Third and Jefferson streets.

Mr. Becker was a member of Central Baptist church and was an active member of prominent Masonic bodies. He was a member of St. Paul's lodge No. 500, A.F. & A.M., Springfield chapter No. 1, Royal Arch Masons, Springfield council No. 2, Royal and Select Masons, Springfield Consistory, Elwood Commandery Knights Templar, Ansar Temple, the Royal Order of Jesters, Sangamon lodge No. 6 of the Odd Fellows and Prairie State Encampment of the Odd Fellows order.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margaret J. Becker, head of the Sangamon County Republican Womens organization; a son, Clarance O. Becker; grandson, Richard Thayer Becker; three brothers, Arthur T. Becker, Walter T. Becker, of Peoria; and Carl H. Becker.
