Dolores Maria Ortega
April 12, 1935 - September 22, 2014

Dolores Ortega was taken home to Our Lord on September 22, 2014. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Flavio Ortega and her four daughters: Elizabeth Ortega, Barbara Lorenz, Monica Clark, and Crissy Ortega. She also has four grandchildren: Tanya Faddis, Amber Lowstetter, Kent Clark, and Michelle Clark and one great-grandson, Bo Lowstetter.

Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, she was the youngest of seven children and the last surviving family member. She was raised in a devoted Catholic environment with one sibling entering the convent. Other siblings played the violin and piano, providing Dolores hours of entertainment.

Dolores met her future husband due to a case of mistaken identity. She thought he was a classmate she knew. With that first encounter, Flavio knew it was love at first sight and after a period of courtship, they wed on December 26, 1953. They enjoyed many years together, recently celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary last December.

Dolores and Flavio raised four daughters. Periodically she worked in the main office for St. Emydius elementary school while they were enrolled there. Her children remember the fun games she played with them after school. She was an accomplished seamstress, spending hours sewing inventive Halloween costumes and clothing for various occasions.

Despite her asthma attacks, she maintained an active physical lifestyle. Her hobbies included tennis, painting, ping pong, gardening and attending dances with her husband.

Later in life, Dolores became a business owner of a health food store on Tweedy Blvd. in South Gate, California for close to 20 years. Her children remember her enthusiasm for growing flowers and various vegetables, some of which she sold at her health food store. Although she was a life-long vegetarian, she often encountered good-natured ribbing from her family and friends who were avid meat eaters. Her family always enjoyed her wonderful home-cooked meals.

We thank her for being such a wonderful wife, mother and friend. She will be greatly missed.
