Trooper James Gross was the 33rd Patrol Officer in the U.S. in 1996, to be killed in the line of duty. He was the son of Barbara and Robert Gross. He graduated from Brunswick High School in Brunswick, Ohio in 1987. He then attended Akron University in Akron, Ohio where he earned an associate degree in criminal justice in 1991. He worked his way through College by being a Restaurent Manager. James married Veronica Watson on August 21st, 1993. He served both at Mt. Gilead and Ashland, Ohio Posts.

Trooper Gross had responded to a CB-Radio report of an erratic driver on the road. He cautiously approached the vehicle and was shot twice. The suspect was eventually captured, convicted of capital murder, and sentenced to death. A portion of Interstate 71 in Ashland County, Ohio has been dedicated and renamed, James R. Gross Memorial Highway. Between mile posts 189 and 191.
