Born in Providence, a son of the late George and Edith (Sperbick) Irwin, he had lived in Lincoln for most of his life.
He enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Corps and served with the 12th Air Force in North Africa and Italy. He flew 23 missions as a tail gunner on a B-17. He is a former POW. He is a recipient of the Air Medal, Purple Heart, and other Military Awards. Upon his discharge, he was a watch repairman for many years and also a patrolman at Rhode Island College. He was a Deacon and Past President of the former Lonsdale Baptist Church.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Raymond A. Irwin and his wife, Kris of Oakhurst, NJ; one son-in-law, Stephen Messier of North Carolina; three grandchildren, Karolyn Rodriguez, Michael Messier and Kyle Messier; and two great grandsons. He was the father of the late Janice Messier.
His funeral service will be held SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 at 11 A.M. at BELLOWS FUNERAL CHAPEL, 160 River Road, Lincoln. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston.
