Nancy Winn married Emeric Chase, a cousin of Salmon P. Chase, Lincoln ' s Secretary of the Treasury and abolitionist activist, in 1848. They moved to Liberty township, Woodson County, Kansas before 1860 to support the Free Soil party. Nancy and Emeric had six children, Oscar who died in infancy. Lucetta, John Oscar, Salmon Portland,Arthur Winn And Abraham Lincoln. Shortly after the start of the Civil War in 1861, Emeric volunteered to fight for the Union. Nancy returned to her family in Ohio with the youngest children while Lucetta and Oscar remained in Kansas. In February 1861 Nancy died in Ohio and later that year Emeric died of disease while still active in the Union Army in St. Louis MO where he is buried in the Union cemetery.
