Charles was born in Jeffersonville, Indiana to Thomas and Sarah Henrietta Sherman Holden.

In his young adult years, he became an acrobat with the LaChass Brothers for the Barnum Ringling circus. Not wanting to travel, he made the decision that the "Circus Life" was not for him.

On 17 Jul 1888 he married Salina K McPherson and they had four children: James Sherman, William Thomas, Nellie and Edwin Fenton Holden. He provided family support as a wood machinist.

The marriage to Salina did not work out and Charles boarded a train to the small town of Timberton, Louisiana. There he was employed at the sawmill. He was fortunate to board with Henry S Preston (who also worked at the mill) and his wife Jessie Vogan Preston.

It is through Henry's wife, Jessie, that Charles met Ora May Vogan. Charles and Ora were wed on 29 Mar 1913 at the home of Henry and Preston. One daughter, Louisa Wilhelmenia Holden was born to this marriage on 5 Nov 1913.

When the sawmill closed, it became a ghost town so Charles and Ora moved to Plaquemine. He became the proprietor of the Plaquemine Steam Laundry service.

The timing of Charles Holden's death was during the depression and he was subsequently buried in an unmarked grave at the Protestant Cemetery.

Attempts have been made to locate some record that would indicate his plot number without success. Hence, this memorial is a tribute to his legacy.
