Mr. James C. Shaffer, 90, of Cleveland, passed away Saturday, September 27, 2014, at Joy Health and Rehab. Visitation will be 1:00-1:45 p.m. Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at Ray Funeral Home. Graveside services with military honors will immediately follow beginning at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at Delta Heights Memorial Gardens on Highway 8 with Rev. Taylor Shaffer officiating.
Mr. Shaffer was born in Eupora, MS on January 1, 1924, to Webb and Louvina Bell Shaffer. He was a graduate of Eupora High School, and afterwards he proudly served our country in the United States Army from 1943-1946 during the European Theater portion of WWII. During the war he served as a field artillery tank driver and was a member of the civil air patrol. On November 24, 1956, he married Peggy Ann Flanagan. He retired from South Central Bell and then worked for 20 years with Douglas-Lomason Company until 1989. Mr. Shaffer held his private pilot license, was a member of the Greenville Motorcycle Club, and was an antique car enthusiast. He loved motorcycles so much, he rode them until he was 86 years old.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Webb and Louvina Bell Shaffer; and niece, Vickie Hill.
Mr. Shaffer is survived by his wife of almost 56 years, Peggy Flanagan Shaffer of Ruleville; children, James Dale Shaffer (Lisa) of Cleveland, Ginger Shaffer Salley of Cleveland, and Carrie Shaffer (Jimmy Baldwin) of Shaw; grandchildren, Joshua Shaffer of Cleveland, Taylor Shaffer of Tupelo, Jerry Wayne Salley, Samantha Salley, and Angela Salley all of Cleveland; great-grandchild, Elijah Shaffer of Tupelo; sister, Shelby Jean Hill of Ellington, MO; nephew, Don Hill of Houston, TX; and nieces, Susan and Melinda Hill both of Ellington, MO.
