Roger LeRoy Allen, 90, died on April 6, 2016, at Salemtowne Retirement Community. Roger was born in Dunlap, Iowa, on July 15, 1925, to the late Mrs. Roaletta Myrtle Deaton and Mr. Glenn Melvin Allen. He was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem and active for almost 60 years. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS General C. Morton, a troop transport, as a radioman for 33 months. He traveled through five of the seven seas, touched port on five continents, crossed the equator twelve times, and circled the world by water once. He retired from Western Electric after 33 years of service. For more than sixty years, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a 32nd Degree Mason. He enjoyed woodworking, automotive repair, and camping with family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Gertie Priddy Allen, two sisters, Bertha Jordan and Carol Vore, and one brother, Gerald “Dean” Allen. Surviving are one sister, Marie Elkin of Sioux Falls, SD, one daughter, Phyllis Grubbs (husband Perry) of Lyman, SC, and two sons, Roger Allen, Jr. (wife Janie) of Fuquay-Varina, NC, and Glen Allen (wife Brenda) of Concord, NC. Also surviving are six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 12:30PM on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Reverend Kevin Conley officiating. A visitation will be held from 11:30AM-12:30PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel on Saturday, April 9, 2016. Interment will follow at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown, NC.
