DOUGHERTY, 76, SERVICES SET FOR MONDAY
Judge served on bench for 32 years

Mass for Judge Charles Dougherty, 76, who retired in January from the Circuit Court, will be said at 11 a.m. Monday in the auditorium of Holy Name Cathedral, 11 E. Chicago Ave.

Judge Dougherty died Thursday in Presbyterian-St. Luke's Hospital from injuries suffered Sunday in a nursing home at 1901 Lincoln Park West when his dressing gown caught fire.

Judge Dougherty was on the bench for 32 years. He was elected to the Circuit Court on June 2, 1952, to fill a vacancy, and installed as Criminal court judge a week later. He had been a Municipal court judge for 16 years before going to the Circuit court.

Judge Dougherty graduated from Kent College of Law. He was an assistant state's attorney from 1925 to 1929 and from 1932 to 1936. Judge Dougherty was honored in Chicago in 1966 for his long career as a jurist and for his fundraising efforts for the American Medical Center, Denver. At the testimonial banquet, Sen. Paul Douglas called him "a humane judge." capable of mercy as well as strict justice. Federal District Court Judge Abraham L. Marovitz said Dougherty was an "all-American good guy."

Dougherty served with the Army in France during World War I. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was honored two years ago for his service to the organization.

Judge Dougherty formerly lived at 260 E. Chestnut St.

Survivors include four sisters, Miss Mary Dougherty, a writer for the Chicago Sun-Times, Mrs. Lloyd Lewis, Mrs. Harry Boyson, and Sister Mary St. Gerald.

JUDGE C.S. DOUGHERTY DIES AT 76

A requiem high Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the Cathedral of the Holy Name in Chicago, for Judge Charles S. Dougherty, a former Dougherty resident, who died Thursday at a Chicago hospital.

He was born Oct. 2, 1892, in Chicago, to Patrick J. and Anna W. (Walsh) Dougherty. He was graduated from Kent College of Law, Chicago, and from 1925 to 1929, he was in the state's attorney's office. In 1936, he was appointed associate judge of the municipal court in Chicago. In 1952, he was elected to the circuit court where he served until retiring in 1968.

Survivors include four sisters, Miss Mary Dougherty, Chicago, Sister Mary St. Gerald, B.V.M., Dubuque, Mrs. Lloyd Lewis, Chicago, and Mrs. Harry Boysen, Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Agnes Dougherty, in 1955, and his second wife, Mariellen Dougherty, in 1965; and four brothers.

Visitation will be at the John Carroll Sons Home for Funerals at 25 E. Erie, Chicago, after 2 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dougherty, at a later date.
