James Athearn was the son of the Hon. George Athearn of West Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard, and Hepsibah Hussey of Nantucket. He moved to Nantucket in 1806, marrying his first cousin, Lydia Cary, the following year. He served as Cashier of the Pacific Bank from 1810 until 1837, when he became President of the institution. After suffering the loss of Washington House hotel on Nantucket to fire in 1836, and $44,000 dollars in whale oil and buildings in the Nantucket fire of 1838 (his were the greatest losses in this fire), he went bankrupt in 1843 and had to step down from the bank presidency. He was a Boston dealer in coal and wood at the time of his death.
